Dryer problems by symptom
Runs but no heat (electric). A failed heating element, blown thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat or cycling thermostat. A blown thermal fuse often means the vent is restricted.
Runs but no heat (gas). A failed igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils.
Won't start. A blown thermal fuse, a faulty door switch, a failed start switch or a tripped breaker. On electric dryers, one tripped side of a double breaker can let the drum turn without heat.
Drum won't turn. A broken drive belt, a failed idler pulley or a motor problem.
Takes too long to dry. A clogged vent or lint screen, a weak element, or clothes coming from a washer that is not spinning fully.
Squealing, thumping or scraping. Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, drum glides or felt seals.

When to call
Call if the dryer runs without heat, will not start, smells hot or burnt, takes two cycles to dry, or makes new scraping or thumping noises. Stop using it if you smell burning.
Dryer vent and fire safety
Lint build-up in the vent is a leading cause of dryer fires. Clean the lint screen every load and have the vent run checked if drying times grow or the outside vent hood barely moves.
Repair or replace a dryer?
Most dryer repairs are straightforward and worth doing: elements, fuses, belts, rollers, igniters. A failed motor or control board on a very old dryer may tip the balance toward replacement.
