Washing machine problems by symptom
Won't spin. Unbalanced loads, a failed lid switch or door lock, a worn drive belt, a broken motor coupler or a shift actuator. If the drum still has water in it, the drain is often the real problem.
Won't drain. A clogged pump filter, kinked drain hose, blocked standpipe, or failed drain pump.
Won't fill or fills slowly. Closed supply valves, clogged inlet screens, kinked hoses or a failed inlet valve.
Won't start. No power at the outlet, child lock on, a door or lid lock fault, or a control board problem.
Leaking. Inlet hoses, door boot seals on front loaders, the pump, the tub seal, or a drain standpipe that overflows.
Shaking, walking or banging. An uneven floor or feet, worn suspension rods, worn shocks, or bad bearings.
Bad smell. Residue in the door seal, detergent drawer or pump area, especially on front loaders.
Error codes by brand
- Samsung: UE (unbalanced), 4C (water supply), 5C (drain), DC (door), LE (leak).
- LG: OE (drain), IE (fill), UE (unbalanced), dE (door), LE (motor locked).
- Whirlpool / Maytag: F5E2 (lid lock), F8E1 (long fill), F9E1 (long drain), F7E1 (motor).
- GE: E20 / E21 (drain), E30 (fill), E52 (lid lock).
Front load vs top load
Front loaders use less water but rely on a door lock, a door boot gasket and a pump filter that needs regular cleaning. Top loaders often fail at the lid switch, coupler, suspension rods or shift actuator. Both are covered on our front load washer repair and top load washer repair pages.
When to call
Call if the same problem returns after the basic checks: load redistributed, valves open, pump filter cleaned, hoses straight. Call straight away if water is on the floor or the drum makes grinding or banging noises during spin.
Greer water and detergent
Greer's city water is fairly soft. That means scale is rarely the cause of a failure, but using too much HE detergent creates excess suds, slow draining and residue. Matching the dose to the load protects the pump and seals.
Repair or replace?
Most washers under about 8 to 10 years old are worth repairing when the fault is a door lock, pump, inlet valve, belt, coupler or lid switch. Failed bearings or a cracked tub on an older machine can make replacement the better choice. Read more in our guide to repairing or replacing a washer.
Technician insight
A large share of 'won't spin' calls are really drain problems: the washer will not spin while water remains in the drum. Checking the drain path first saves time and parts.
