Top load washer problems by symptom
Lid lock light flashing. The lid lock assembly or lid switch has failed, or something is preventing the lid from closing fully.
Hums but won't agitate or spin. A broken motor coupler on older direct drive models, or a failed shift actuator, drive belt or clutch on newer ones.
Won't drain. A clogged or failed drain pump, or a blocked drain hose or standpipe.
Banging during spin. Worn suspension rods let the tub swing and strike the cabinet. This is very common on Samsung and Whirlpool top loaders.
Leaking underneath. Inlet hoses, the pump, a cracked tub or a failed tub seal.
Clothes still soaking wet. The washer is not reaching full spin, often a belt, clutch, actuator or drain problem.

When to call
Call if the lid lock light keeps flashing, if the washer hums without moving, if it bangs loudly in spin, or if clothes come out soaking wet more than once.
Greer water and detergent
Greer's soft city water rarely causes scale on top loaders. More common is detergent overuse in HE top loaders, which slows draining and leaves residue. Use the HE dose for the load size.
Repair or replace a top loader?
Lid locks, couplers, belts, suspension rods and pumps are usually worthwhile repairs. A failed transmission or cracked outer tub on an older machine may make replacement the better choice.
